Sugar Loaf is the middle of three tunnels towards the eastern end of the Hull & Barnsley Railway and is identical in design to the other two – Drewton and Weedley. However it’s not in such good condition. Part of the brick lining as fallen away, exposing the bare chalk beneath.
Landfill has encroached to within 10 yards of its eastern end and, until the autumn of 2008, the 132-yard bore had been full of rubble.
