On this day in 1848, 178 years ago, the Glasgow Paisley Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway inaugurated services over its short branch to Galston which would eventually be extended over Newmilns Viaduct.

Although its southern portal is now buried, the northern entrance to Ardsley's curved tunnel still looks out into a short cutting which walkers pass by on the Trans Pennine Trail.
