On this day in 1908, 117 years ago, having being built out from opposite sides of the Tees, the main span of Queen Alexandra Bridge's bowstring steelwork met seamlessly in the middle.

Although its southern portal is now buried, the northern entrance to Ardsley's curved tunnel still looks out into a short cutting which walkers pass by on the Trans Pennine Trail.
