On this day in 1966, 60 years ago, the engineering colossus of Catesby Tunnel was retired from service just 68 years after it first started earning its keep.

The Border Counties Railway across moorland beyond Kielder on a low embankment, en route to Riccarton Junction.

Picnickers enjoy the view of Water-cum-Jolly Dale in the Peaks, 90 feet above the River Wye. They're sitting on an artificial ledge, built to carry the main line between Cressbrook and Litton tunnels.

Today, the northern approach cutting to the now-buried Duckmanton Tunnel is a nature reserve.

Having left Combe Down Tunnel, trains on the Somerset & Dorset headed south through a stone-walled cutting.

In the middle of nowhere, the Waverley's trackbed curves north through a shallow cutting.
