Healey Dell Viaduct carried trains 105 feet above the River Spodden on eight arches - three of them skewed - built of locally quarried stone. Opened in 1870, the line over it survived for 97 years.

One-shot bridges

The Border Counties Railway at Chollerton crossed the water on a fine skew bridge which is now listed.

Englishcombe bridge (SAD/8) is located 1 mile and 12 chains from the northern end of the S&D's Bath extension. The structure benefited from restoration work in 1990 and is now part of the city's linear park.

In 1932, the southern arch (left) of East Buxton bridge (no.75) on the old St Pancras to Manchester main line was close to collapse. £3,500 paid for its rebuild.

At Newmillerdam near Wakefield, a three-arched bridge spans the old trackbed. The centre one is reinforced with bullhead rail.

In the V of a junction, the folk of Roxburgh can watch the world go by in the shadow of a missing bridge.

In the Forest of Dean, a delightful skew bridge helps walkers across the old trackbed close to Mierystock summit.

Between Thornton and Denholme, the Great Northern's line includes an elegant accommodation bridge which sits astride a culvert.
