This attractive signal box, which controlled trains on part of the single line from Alnwick to Cornhill, opened in 1887 and closed in 1953.

Romaldkirk Station wasn't ready when the 8¾ mile Middleton-in- Teesdale branch welcomed its first traffic in May 1868, opening two months late. Its service was lost in 1965.

The trackbed between Shankend Station's platforms - just south of the viaduct - now resembles a cricket pitch.

With his platform and waiting shelter opposite, Slaggyford's Station Master had an imposing place to call home.

Having lain derelict for many years, Hornsea Town Station (1864-1964) - at the eastern end of the Trans Pennine Trail - was converted to residential accommodation in 1987.

Originally christened Scotsdyke, this station shut up shop in 1949, 20 years before the Waverley line that ran between its platforms.

Closed in 1967, the householder at Brookland Halt - formerly part of the New Romney branch - can still 'enjoy' the regular spectacle of a train passing...carrying nuclear waste.
