On this day in 1849, 175 years ago, the six segmental arches of Twizel Viaduct carried their first live load following completion by the York Newcastle & Berwick Railway.
The Bishop Auckland to Durham line opened to passengers on 19th August 1856 with intermediate stations at Hunwick, Willington and Brancepeth. The station closed in May 1964 but survives as a private residence.
