Torksey Viaduct opening
A video report on the official opening of Torksey Viaduct as a footpath, following a redundancy period of 57 years.
The structure caused considerable controversy after work on it was completed. Captain Lintorn Simmons, the Board of Trade’s inspector, refused to authorise its use due to concerns over its strength. Resolving the issue involved four months of testing and technical argument involving many of the day’s great engineers.
Today it stands as one of the earliest examples of a box girder bridge.
