On this day in 1953, 73 years ago, a draughtsman belatedly finished drawings for strengthening ribs needed to support part of Clifton Hall Tunnel. It collapsed before they could be installed.

A tie bracket for the telegraph wire clings to the mortar of Weedley Tunnel's eastern portal.

The southern approach cutting to Catesby Tunnel still hosts this relic of the Great Central's former signalling system.

This unusual double telegraph pole hides alongside the Monsal Trail which takes in the trackbed of the old Derby-Manchester main line.

Although disconnected from the network in 1991, the post for Crigglestone curve's Down section signal is still standing.

Although the Great Central has long gone, Woodford Halse continues to play host to this substantial signal post.

Borders' weather has taken its toll on this staywire, on the northern approach embankment to Shankend Viaduct.
