On this day in 1835, 191 years ago, one of Watford Tunnel's four construction shafts fell in, entombing ten men beneath many tonnes of debris for several days.

A tie bracket for the telegraph wire clings to the mortar of Weedley Tunnel's eastern portal.

The southern approach cutting to Catesby Tunnel still hosts this relic of the Great Central's former signalling system.

This unusual double telegraph pole hides alongside the Monsal Trail which takes in the trackbed of the old Derby-Manchester main line.

Although disconnected from the network in 1991, the post for Crigglestone curve's Down section signal is still standing.
