On this day in 1844, 182 years ago, engineer James Trubshaw laid the first brick in Caldon Tunnel, part of a tramroad serving the limestone quarries of the Staffordshire Moorlands.

Overlooked by the south portal of Oakamoor Tunnel is this delightful and well cared for crossing keeper's cottage.

This decrepit hut belonged to the Kiplingcotes pway department.

These limekilns, just west of Millers Dale Station, were served by the Midland's Manchester-Derby main line. Originally cut in 1880, the massive concrete buttresses were added in the 1920s.

Platelayers exposed to the icy blasts of Stainmore could take refuge in this cabin. It's still visible to trans-Pennine traffic on the A66.

The most important intermediate station on the Alnwick-Cornhill branch was Wooler which boasted a large goods warehouse. Today it is home to an antiques dealer.

This hut provided welcome refuge for platelayers fettling the former Buxton-Ashbourne railway. At least the gradients were slight.
