On this day in 1869, 157 years ago, the first train crossed Sir James Brunlees' Solway Viaduct, an outstanding feat of engineering that extended over the water for 1,990 yards.

One-shot bridges

The Border Counties Railway at Chollerton crossed the water on a fine skew bridge which is now listed.

Englishcombe bridge (SAD/8) is located 1 mile and 12 chains from the northern end of the S&D's Bath extension. The structure benefited from restoration work in 1990 and is now part of the city's linear park.

In 1932, the southern arch (left) of East Buxton bridge (no.75) on the old St Pancras to Manchester main line was close to collapse. £3,500 paid for its rebuild.

At Newmillerdam near Wakefield, a three-arched bridge spans the old trackbed. The centre one is reinforced with bullhead rail.

In the V of a junction, the folk of Roxburgh can watch the world go by in the shadow of a missing bridge.

In the Forest of Dean, a delightful skew bridge helps walkers across the old trackbed close to Mierystock summit.

Between Thornton and Denholme, the Great Northern's line includes an elegant accommodation bridge which sits astride a culvert.

Vegetation consumes a farmer's accommodation bridge over the former Charnwood Forest line near Low Woods, Shepshed.

When the gradient at Rudgwick Station was deemed too steep by the railway inspector, the line had to be rebuilt higher resulting in this two-level bridge over the River Arun. (Photo: Graham Crummett)
